As an overseas port, Bremerhaven focuses on the transhipment of containers and automobiles. It also has various dedicated terminals, e.g. for handling fruit and vegetables.
The station areas Kaiserhafen, Nordhafen, Imsumer Deich and Weddewarder Tief, as well as the sidings at Bremerhaven Speckenbüttel operated by DB Netz AG, add up to a total track length of around 76 kilometres, of which approx. 47km are electrified. The station has brake testing systems on all departure tracks, sidings for stabling 16 shunting locomotives as well as 4 electrified stabling sidings for main-line locomotives.
